Joined NCSSM in July 2023
Mareca Lodge joined NCSSM in July 2023 as an Instructor of Biology on our Morganton campus. She is a native of rural Pennsylvania and earned her PhD in biochemistry from North Carolina State University, where she had the opportunity to mentor students in research projects including a student from NCSSM-Durham!. Mareca’s research focused on biochemistry with an emphasis on physiology and immunology, specifically “Interpreting the role of fructose metabolism in acute and chronic exposure within macrophage subsets in the context of normal and inflammatory/fibrotic states of the liver.” Her work stemmed from understanding the progression of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, a progressive disease with multiple liver pathologies brought on by overconsumption of carbohydrates and fats with low physical exercise. Mareca is excited to continue her passion for nutrition and education by teaching Anatomy and Physiology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, and online Neuroscience with an emphasis in biochemical principles. In her spare time she enjoys crafting, specifically crocheting and jewelry making, as well as doing anything in the kitchen.
