The NCSSM Foundation was created in 1979, with the specific purpose of providing private, philanthropic support to the school. For more than 40 years, the Foundation has supported the academic aspirations of talented North Carolina students enrolled in our residential, online, and distance education programs..
The Foundation’s mission
The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics Foundation has been organized to operate exclusively for charitable and educational purposes, including, but not limited to, receiving, administering and granting funds for the support of the academic and educational programs of, and any other phase of operation or program of, the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, as the Board of Directors of the NCSSM Foundation in its discretion may deem appropriate for the advancement of education.

Working together: our sources of funding
North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics is funded primarily through two entities: the State of North Carolina, which provides the largest portion of the funding necessary to operate the school, and the NCSSM Foundation, which funds the remainder of the school’s budget, providing essential support to fill unmet needs.
State funding
In simplest terms, state funding covers almost all of the basic infrastructure needed to keep the school running. Nearly all of NCSSM’s state budget is earmarked for salaries, utilities, and maintenance. That leaves very little state-allocated money for the many other facets of the school, from chemistry lab supplies to mentorship opportunities, and extracurricular activities to salary supplements. These unmet needs are why we need additional support from NCSSM friends, family, current students and alumni!
NCSSM Foundation
You might be surprised to learn that the NCSSM Foundation is older than the school itself. The school’s visionaries knew from the beginning that NCSSM would never be able to achieve its true potential on state dollars alone. Private support would be necessary to fulfill its promise to students and educators statewide. As such, the NCSSM Foundation was formed in 1979, a year before the school opened, to provide a vehicle by which to garner the additional funds necessary to open the school and sustain it in the years ahead.
The NCSSM Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, is the only entity set up to solicit, receive, and manage private, corporate, or foundation dollars given in support of the school. In other words, the only donations that can be claimed as tax-deductible gifts on year-end tax forms are those given directly to the Foundation.
