Lori Hackney Newnam

Dean of Counseling

Lori Newnam is a North Carolina native, who was born in Watts Hospital in Durham. She has over 25 years of experience counseling, advocating, and supporting adolescents in academic, residential, and community settings. She has been a counselor at NCSSM since August 2005 and began serving as the Dean of Counseling in 2016. She earned a B.A. in psychology from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and her M.A. in counselor education from North Carolina Central University. She is a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) and a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor. Lori leads the NCSSM Mental Health and Wellness Committee and serves on other committees to promote the mental and physical well-being of students. She has supported students by providing personal, academic and college counseling, and she is passionate about collaborating with students, parents and colleagues in support of student wellness.
