Joined NCSSM in August 2026
Katia Bellal joined NCSSM in August 2026 as an Instructor of World Languages for our Morganton campus, where she teaches French through an interdisciplinary and global approach. Before joining NCSSM, she taught French language, literature, and culture at the University of Virginia and worked in education and training in the United States and France. An Africanist scholar, her interests include African, French, and Francophone literature; Amazigh oral traditions; and the cultures of North and Sub-Saharan Africa. Her research examines the relationships among language, culture, memory, and identity and combines archival study with fieldwork in Algeria and France, particularly with Kabyle and Tuareg communities. In the classroom, she incorporates literature, storytelling, music, and authentic cultural materials to foster meaningful language learning. Katia earned a master’s degree in British literature at Université Paris-Est Créteil in France (UPEC) and her master’s degree in French and Francophone studies at the University of Virginia, where she is currently a doctoral candidate in French language and literature. A lifelong traveler and language enthusiast, Katia enjoys literature, music, nature, and discovering how stories connect people across languages, cultures, and borders.
