Jim Kirkpatrick serves as Instructor of Instrumental Music at NCSSM-Morganton, where he is a founding faculty member. He directs the school’s instrumental music program and mentors a Summer Research and Innovation project examining the impact of music therapy on individuals with dementia. He also founded and conducts the Burke Youth Wind Symphony, a collaborative ensemble uniting NCSSM students and area high school musicians.
Before joining NCSSM, Jim led award-winning bands at T.C. Roberson, West Forsyth, and North Forsyth High Schools. His ensembles earned more than 40 superior ratings and twice performed at the North Carolina Music Educators Association State Conference, including the 2014 premiere of “Bounce” by Nathan Daughtrey featuring jazz trumpeter Mike Sailors.
An advocate for innovation in music education, Jim has presented numerous clinics on pedagogy, ensemble development, and rehearsal techniques. A National Board Certified Teacher since 2002, he served as President of the North Carolina Bandmasters Association and completed a fellowship at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He has conducted and adjudicated at more than 75 festivals and honor bands across the Southeast. His honors include the NCBA Award of Excellence, recognition as a Grammy Music Educator Quarterfinalist, and induction into the American School Band Directors Association.
