Joined NCSSM in August 2020

Kevin Ji joined the math department in Durham in August 2020, teaching previously for seven years at public high schools in Washington, DC, and Oakland, CA. At NCSSM, he has primarily taught AP Statistics and introductory Calculus, helping develop materials for each with the aim of incorporating student-led discovery, sense-making, and the visualization of mathematics into both curricula. Kevin is a Desmos Teaching Fellow and alumnus of the Park City Math Institute (PCMI) Teacher Leadership Program; through both, he has worked with communities of teachers across the country to make mathematics accessible to a broad range of students irrespective of background. Kevin is a strong believer in eclecticism in teaching: he has developed and taught January Term courses covering topics from the Chinese Exclusion Act and immigration in America to creating mathematical animations using 3blue1brown’s Manim library in Python to advising groups in the Research in Mathematics J-Term course. Outside of classroom teaching, he loves co-sponsoring NCSSM’s Asian Student Association and helping students with math during any and all free moments. Outside of work, Kevin relaxes by playing sports of any kind (favorites include basketball and rock climbing) and cooking, especially Chinese dishes.
