Suzanne Sikes joined NCSSM in August 2025 as Instructor of Biology for the NCSSM Connect program. A life-long scientist and educator, Suzanne has lived in North Carolina for more than two decades. As a researcher, she investigated the electrochemical mechanisms at neuronal synapses that underlie learning, memory, and addiction. More recently, her research at NCSU explored the adaptability of a marine microbe for use as a novel aquatic biosensor of corrosive environments. As Associate Director of Academic Programs, she co-developed curriculum and laboratory approaches to introduce pharmacology to high school biology and chemistry students. Suzanne has a long-standing commitment to mentoring high school research initiatives and has experience teaching high school Biology, AP Biology, AP Seminar, and AP Research for many years at Woods Charter School, as well as an undergraduate pharmacology course at Duke University. She is excited to bring research-driven education to her teaching at NCSSM. Outside of work, Suzanne enjoys almost anything outdoors!
