As a member of the engineering and computer science (ECS) department and research mentorship faculty at NCSSM since 2015, Letitia Hubbard has worked to train students in applied and interdisciplinary thinking and to broaden participation in STEM fields. Letitia currently serves as BME convener of the ECS department and has expanded and developed course offerings including Honors Biomedical Engineering and a Summer Research Program in Engineering. She serves as co-advisor for the National Society of Black Engineers NSBE Jr. chapter and has sponsored students in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Competition (2020 National Winners) and the Toshiba Exploravision competition (2024 National 1st Place Winners). Since 2018, Letitia has served as the Program Director for the NCSSM-Durham Step Up to STEM summer program. Letitia was honored to receive the UNC Board of Governors Award for Service to Students (2020) and the NCSSM Keeper of the Dream Award (2022) and was selected as a UNC System Faculty Fellow (2022). Letitia has also been recognized by external organizations as an EdTech Trendsetter in Education (2021), a WEPAN Educator’s Awardee (2022), and as a Durham Magazine Woman of Achievement (2024).
