YouTube Silver Play Button!

Jeff Hatley, Joyce Ventimiglia, Dan Overby

Congratulations to NCSSM and the Division of Extended Learning for earning a YouTube Silver Play Button. This award is given to channels that have surpassed the milestone of 100,000 (or 100k) subscribers. If each of our subscribers were a light-year, that’s enough to span across the entire Milky Way.

The channel was started by Joyce Ventimiglia in January 2009 as a place to share video content created for NCSSM, including videos used in our new (at the time) Online Program. YouTube was NCSSM’s first social media channel.

Joyce was hired by Distance Learning (now the Division of Extended Learning) as a video producer in 2001. Currently she works as an educational consultant & project manager for the Teaching, Learning and Curriculum team, primarily focusing on hybrid course design and development.

Over the course of 2020-2021, our most popular videos (some created as early as 2002) received a significant uptick in views when teachers began using our instructional videos as a replacement for labs when students could not meet in person. People from all over the world have used our work as study aids. Popular playlists include Engineering (featuring Garrett Love), videos made for the Ryden Program for Artificial Intelligence (featuring Charlotte Dungan), Music Theory & Practice (featuring Scott Laird) along with hundreds of AP Calculus, AP Chemistry videos (featuring emeritus faculty: Anna DeConti, Chuck Roser, & Myra Halpin).

NCSSM YouTube Channel Fun Facts:

Anyone is welcome to use these videos in their courses as long as they are attributed as work created by the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. Most videos on the channel are licensed under creative commons CC-BY-NC-SA 4.0

A big shout out to the Division for helping us meet our Strategic Objective of engaging 1,000,000 students and 100,000 teachers and a big shout out to  Joyce Ventimiglia, Dan Overby, Jeff Hatley and our tremendously talented faculty for the role they have played in making our channel such a success!
