Description of Duties:
Security, Patrol, & Enforcement
- Position will work rotating shifts twelve-hour shifts to provide safety and security to the campus community and facilities. This includes shifts worked overnight, weekends, and holidays. Position may be required to work mandatory overtime as needed for large scale events (graduations, move-in day, etc.).
- Inspects buildings and grounds to observe and secure facilities against fire and other situations of potential loss to NCSSM – Durham.
- Admits and releases authorized persons, removes unauthorized persons and provides access control for approved personnel.
- Responds, investigates, and documents disturbances and/or incidents, takes necessary and appropriate actions to maintain order, safety and to protect property. Cooperates with campus staff and external law enforcement agencies while conducting investigations. Testifies in court, if applicable or required.
- Respond to fire alarms including smoke and trouble alarms. Document causes of alarms and forward information to the appropriate entity. Replace and program broken or malfunctioning smoke detector heads. Perform basic operation of fire panels.
- Provides escort services as requested for students and visitors to NCSSM – Durham facilities and parking lots.
- Participates in campus-wide events that enhance the Campus Safety Department’s interaction and visibility amongst the campus community.
- Special assignments including staffing of external/internal events and protecting NCSSM -Durham equipment and property.
- Required to operate NCSSM – Durham vehicles including, but not limited to vans, UTV’s, and any other motorized vehicles safely.
- Participate in the upkeep of the NCSSM fleet of vehicles.
Data Analysis/Reports
- Modify, retrieve and track incident, hazard, statistical and other data, and to compose and prepare correspondence, surveys, memoranda, routine reports and other written material.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge – Technical: Understanding of protective, security, and enforcement practices. Knowledge and skill in basic first aid. Ability to apply considerable knowledge of property security and enforcement procedures. Thorough knowledge of the policies, rules, and regulations applicable to the property being guarded, sufficient to explain, apply, and enforce the policies, rules, and regulations. Organizational awareness and working knowledge of the infrastructure of the assigned area. Proficiency in using a variety of security and enforcement equipment, which may include parking meters, vehicle boots, gates, alarm panels, radios, cameras, and electronic ticketing devices. Ability to use the full functionality of security/surveillance systems. May require ability to perform routine maintenance on equipment. Ability to keep abreast of developments in security practices.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Valid North Carolina driver’s license or valid out-of-state driver’s license and the ability to receive a North Carolina driver’s license within 60 days of employment. Candidates must have no serious driving-related convictions.

Description of Duties:
The primary purpose of the Program Associate position is to support the Dean of Science and Science Department Chairs with a focus on budgeting, and record keeping across 3 programs (Durham, Morganton, Online) and an emphasis on purchasing and receiving for Durham. The Science Department employees participate in a large number of extracurricular events, summer programs, and professional development workshops that often involve travel and registration – in this regard, this position will primarily serve the Durham-based employees. This is an in-person position based at the Durham campus.
Duties include Departmental Budget Management; Departmental Purchasing and Receiving; Administrative and Departmental Program Support; HR and Business Office Liaison and other Duties as assigned.
Departmental Budget Management
- Independently manage multiple budgets (State, Foundation) with detailed breakdown by expenditure.
- Keep up-to-date balance sheets for all accounts.
Departmental Purchasing and Receiving
- Place orders as approved by the Chair or Dean for all 3 disciplines in the Durham and Online program.
- Independently use eProcurement software, P Cards, Bank of America, Blackbaud WebPortal.
Administrative and Departmental Program Support
- Organize and maintain paper and online filing systems.
- Route forms for signatures utilizing software such as DocHub.

Description of Duties:
- Procurement (including eProcurement, check requests, etc.), tracking renewals, budget reconciliation, PCard management. This work will be essential for maintaining the dozens of subscriptions the school depends on for applications, services, and systems that run every aspect of technology at NCSSM. Also critical for improving projections for budget planning purposes.
- Solicit and organize purchasing requests so that supplies arrive in a timely manner
- Assist in identifying equipment and supplies in accordance with purchasing guidelines
- Place orders as approved by the CIO
- Communicate order status to the CIO and team members
- Maintain a log of all outstanding orders and check status until filled
- Receive and deliver orders and notify ITS team as appropriate
- Independently uses e-Procurement software, purchase cards, purchase orders, and invoices for ordering supplies
- Independently manages multiple budgets (State, Foundation, SCSSI) with detailed breakdown by expenditure
- Keeps up to date balance sheets for all accounts including end-of-year reconciliation
- Confirm balances of State, Foundation, and SCSSI accounts
- Notify CIO of any negative balances and work with CIO on line item transfers
- Work with Business Office, SCSSI, and Foundation for deposits and check requests, transfers, and other transactions
- Work with CIO to establish future budgets
- Compliance initiatives, including spearheading work to develop, update, and publish new regulations, standards, and procedures. This is critical for the school to become compliant with IT security standards, UNC System requirements, and making sure the school is in a good position for an IT audit by the state. This work is also critical to uncover and address institutional risks and ensure all members of the community, internal to ITS and across the school, are following the same standard sets of guidelines to keep our campus’ technology infrastructure running effectively and securely.
- HR and Business Office Liaison. Complete employee paperwork for permanent hires, temporary hires, independent contractors; conduct employment verifications for temporary hires.
- Coordinate Volunteer forms and background checks
- Assist in Protection of Minors tracking
- Copy and file forms related to employee leave, remote work, conflict of interest, protection of minors, and others
- Assist ITS employees with travel arrangements for conferences, competitions, and J-term to ensure compliance with state and institutional policy. Work with travel agents, airlines, hotels, etc. Work with the Business Office on travel reimbursements
- Provide or remind temporary employees to submit timesheets
- Organizational work, scheduling, work orders, and other miscellaneous administrative needs. Given the large volume of data ITS works with, assistance will be needed in organizing and categorizing that data across a number of systems, including but not limited to Google Drive, Confluence (wikis), Jira (tickets), and other locations. The team’s time and calendaring, including for in-person support, event management, and other occasions, such as interview committee meetings, could use dedicated assistance. Description of Duties: This position performs a variety of tasks ranging from routine and unskilled to highly skilled in the mechanical trades including but not limited to plumbing. This position must apply methods and general procedures of applicable trades/maintenance techniques and develop skills in procedures, techniques, tools, materials and/or equipment appropriate to trade. Description of Duties:
Position reports to the Director of Mentorship and Research in Academic Programs and is responsible for serving as instructor in the Mentorship Program. The Mentorship Program at NC School of Science and Mathematics is in its 44th year and is recognized for its unique mix of over 100 volunteer mentors that provide research opportunities for students while NCSSM instructors provide the instruction necessary for high school students to approach research with confidence, professionalism, and self-reliance. The local research scholars and professionals serve as students’ research mentors in various areas of specialization (including STEM, Social Sciences, Arts, and Humanities), while the NCSSM instructor serves as a facilitator/coach focused on guiding and assessing students’ development of critical thinking as a proactive participant in research and development of personal success skills to accomplish goals, collaborate, and navigate unfamiliar situations in professional environments. Examples of student assignments include: resumes/cover letters, research proposals, oral presentation targeted to a broad audience.
This 12-month full-time, faculty position is responsible for providing instruction of online and residential students in the Mentorship Program courses (Foundations in Research, Senior Research, Engage to Impact) and the Summer Mentorship program; leading co-instructors/teaching assistants for Mentorship; supporting the director in implementing high quality mentor-mentee experiences and ensuring program clarity for students and mentors which includes identifying and supporting areas of improvements, efficiencies, and solutions within the administration of the Mentorship Program, and supporting the mission of the Mentorship and Research team to build community that advances student success in research and innovation; cultivate growth and development of thinkers/makers/doers to identify as leaders and engaged citizens; and facilitate safety and efficient systems to ensure long term success for research and innovation at NCSSM.
General duties include:
- serve as an instructor working with students in face-to-face and online environments to facilitate and assess development of professional and personal success skills, as well as, communication skills of high school 11th and 12th grade students who are participating in research with off-campus mentors, including 2-3 hours in the evening per week and Mentorship travel dates/times (full days for 5 weeks in summer and Tuesdays/Thursdays 12-5:30 p.m. during the academic year);
- develop and communicate to students clear course objectives and goals with emphasis on development of research and professional/personal skills in a wide range of fields including STEM and social sciences/arts/humanities;
- deliver an instructional program that is inclusive of all students and effectively prepares students to take ownership of their experience;
- attend and run instructor meetings, lead co-instructors and teaching assistants;
- transport students as needed (on call during student off campus research times);
- lead webinars that support research and innovation programs at NCSSM (evening events);
- hold office hour sessions, as outlined by the course/program;

The Director of Annual Giving is responsible for co-developing and executing a comprehensive annual giving program that maximizes annual gifts from alumni, parents, faculty, staff, and other friends of NCSSM. This role involves strategic planning, donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship to enhance and grow annual fundraising efforts. This position supports the development team by taking on various tasks and projects as needed. Be flexible and adaptable to shifting priorities and new responsibilities as directed by leadership.
Strategic Planning and Implementation: Develop and carry out comprehensive strategic plans (detailed, long-term goals and actions) to meet annual fundraising targets. Description of Duties:
Director of Data Insight, Research, and Prospect Management will help set and support the foundation’s data-driven strategy and exemplify building a data-fluent culture within the department. The Director will collaborate with partners at the school to achieve comprehensive data integration, insight, and analysis to aid the fundraising process. They will be charged with deriving insights from data to answer some of the foundation’s most critical and challenging questions They will also assist in identifying potential donors and developing creative and innovative prospect research, to support frontline fundraising team members to help drive revenue and increase alumni engagement.
The duties and responsibilities of this role include several key areas.
- Foundation Operations Oversight
- This involves working closely with the Vice Chancellor for Development and the Foundation President to develop and implement standard operating procedures, goals, and budgets for the NCSSM Foundation. The role also requires overseeing the planning, operation, and evaluation of the technology infrastructure that supports development, marketing, and external relations activities. Ensuring compliance with industry standards such as VSE, CASE guidelines, and UNC System policies is essential, as is managing tracking mechanisms for campaigns and initiatives to ensure milestone achievements and leveraging analytics to enhance performance across the division.
- Strategic Leadership
- This includes collaborating with fundraising staff, volunteers, campus partners, and leadership to prepare, review, and disseminate reports that track fundraising progress, KPIs, and annual goals. The role also includes working with the Foundation President to evaluate vendors and analytical tools to promote continuous growth and innovation in reporting and analytics. Additionally, it entails leading technology efforts, reporting, and data tracking initiatives.
- Collaboration and Relationship Building
- This entails partnering with campus colleagues and foundation members to assess reporting and analytics needs that drive fundraising goals and initiatives. The individual in this role also serves as the Foundation’s Raiser’s Edge subject matter expert and participates in the UNC Advancement Services task force.
- Fundraising Management Oversight
- This includes supervising the Annual Fund Manager and creating a comprehensive schedule for fundraising appeals.

As general duties of the position, an NCSSM instructor is expected to plan and develop an instructional program that helps students assimilate content and skills specific to each course; to develop and communicate clear course objectives and goals to students; to structure and manage an environment conducive to learning; to maintain the condition of classroom equipment and monitor and disseminate supplies of consumable laboratory materials; to regularly monitor and evaluate student progress, providing them with resources and feedback on their performance; to hold tutorial sessions and/or office hours as outlined by the department and in response to student needs; and to model for students responsibility to self and others. These expectations will necessarily be extended to the multiple different teaching formats that are supported by the department, including formats for broadcast, remote, hybrid and online teaching as well as in-person instruction at the home campus (Durham for this position). Computer Science Instructors may also teach courses in another of the departmental disciplines (Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science) when applicable to the skill set, background, and interest of the instructor.
Instructors in this position are also expected to follow NCSSM’s philosophy, policies, and procedures; to attend faculty meetings convened for coordination of school activities; to effectively collaborate with colleagues; and to participate in professional development and activities designed for personal intellectual growth. They are further asked to dedicate substantial time towards participation in the academic community within and beyond the school through one or more of the following activities: professional outreach in the form of information, service, and expertise to other schools and organizations; assisting students on special projects or independent, individual or small-group seminar-style study; facilitating student aspirations for college with supportive recommendation letters; developing new course curricula; and providing advising and supervision for school-sponsored programs and extracurricular activities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Competitive candidates will have experience teaching courses in computer science or a closely related discipline; experience in using educational technology; commitment to designing new curriculum; and a willingness to participate in residential school programs including social, recreational, and advisory responsibilities at times other than usual school hours.
Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities for Computer Science instructors include the ability to code in one or more modern programming languages (Java, C, Python), and familiarity with current computer science topics that may include Data Structures, AI, Privacy and Security, Data Science, HCI, Visualization, Machine Learning or other advanced computing topics.

Description of Duties:
The CIO will serve as the leader for the Information Technology Services department and provide leadership, vision, and oversight for all technology and technology related services throughout all functions and locations of the institution. The CIO must be knowledgeable about the IT needs for an institution like NCSSM, including academic programs, administrative functions, and student services. The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) invites applications for a full-time Instructor of Biology at its campus in Durham, North Carolina for the NCSSM Connect program. The position is a 10-month, permanent-track position with full benefits through the State of North Carolina.
The NCSSM Extended Learning division – in which the NCSSM Connect program is a part – serves as the outreach arm of the school, collaborating with public schools and communities to provide all students with access to academically rigorous curriculum and experiential learning experiences that supplement and strengthen mathematics, science, computer science, engineering, and humanities teaching and learning through courses, conferences, summer programs, and teacher professional development.
Description of Duties:
The position is a full-time, ten-month faculty appointment in the Extended Learning division at the NCSSM-Durham campus, with full benefits through the state of North Carolina. The position reports to the NCSSM Director of Instructional Leadership for the NCSSM Connect program and is responsible for providing instruction in Biology through the NCSSM Connect program.
The NCSSM Connect program offers live, synchronous virtual courses taught by NCSSM faculty to students in their local high schools across North Carolina. During class, Connect instructors use group activities and cutting-edge instructional technology to facilitate active participation, with project-based learning and cross-site collaboration with students from around the state. Students are able to interact with others from the mountains to the coast. Our NCSSM Connect program allows smaller, rural schools to offer AP and honors-level courses that may otherwise be unavailable.
General duties:
- Develop and communicate to students clear course objectives and goals;

Health Insurance: Employee only coverage under the State Health Plan (PPO) is provided to employees that work 30 or more hours a week. The cost is determined by the type of coverage elected by the employee. Dependent coverage is available by payroll deduction.
Retirement: Required participation for all employees working 3/4 time or more. Option (1) Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS) requires 6% of gross salary. Employees are vested for retirement after 5 years. Option (2) The Optional Retirement Program (ORP) requires 6% of gross salary. Employees in ORP are vested after 5 years of participating in ORP. As a participant in either retirement program, you are automatically covered for short-term disability (eligible after 1 year of service/no cost), long term disability (eligible after 5 year of service/no cost). Death benefit of minimum $25,000/maximum $50,000 based on previous 12 month salary (eligible after 1 year of service/no cost).
Supplemental Retirement Plans: Supplemental retirement plans provide an additional opportunity to help you reach your retirement goals. Supplemental Plan offerings such as a 401(k), 403(b), or 457(b) on a Roth (after-tax) or pre-tax contributions.
Tuition Waiver: Three courses per academic year tuition free (at any of UNC 17 campuses that offer courses) for permanent full-time employees.

Community Service: 24 hours leave credited each calendar year (prorated for part-time) unless you choose the Mentoring/ tutoring option – 1 hour each week up to a max of 36 hours that schools are in session as documented by the elected board of the local education agency or the governing authority of any non-public school.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
Coaches are responsible for organizing and maintaining an Interscholastic team. Coaches are expected to create an atmosphere which will promote group and individual growth both in athletic skills and the concepts of teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship.
Coaches should have a thorough knowledge of all NCSSM athletic policies and be responsible for their implementation for their team. Coaches work with the NCSSM athletics department to communicate expectations and information to student athletes on their teams. NCSSM Durham athletic coaches report to the Athletic Director for NCSSM Durham.
Coaches are required to be CPR certified and to complete NFHS coursework as required by the NCHSAA. Coaches will be required to drive school vehicles. Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license with no serious driving-related convictions. CDL preferred.

Description of Duties:
This temporary position resides within the Division of Student Life and provides driving assistance for NCSSM students and programs. Responsibilities include being able to drive vehicles from a 10-passenger van to a 44-passenger bus safely to transport NCSSM students to various activities and events (ex: athletic practices and competitions, personal appointments). In particular, NCSSM Varsity Sports teams which may require some evening and weekend responsibilities.
This temporary position must comply with practices and standards laid out in the NCSSM vehicle regulation.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
This position requires general knowledge of vehicles (ex: how to check oil, change a tire, put air in a tire).
Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:
Must have a valid CDL, Class B with passenger and school bus endorsement. Must be in good standing with the department of Motor Vehicles. Must be able to perform pre and post trip inspections.
