Description of Duties:
The expected teaching assignment for the position is three in-person, residential course sections in our World Language program per semester and two short courses during our school’s January-Term. The semester-long courses will include various levels of language and culture courses.
A successful candidate will be able to teach a range of courses in French, Spanish, or another language, from introductory through advanced levels of the language, using the communicative approach, and will be able to develop proficiency-based curricula that provide entry points for students of various proficiencies, including heritage speakers.
This position is open to all World Languages; however, our preference is for French or Spanish with the ability to teach a second language.
Humanities faculty are responsible for developing and teaching innovative and engaging humanities curricula with a focus on interdisciplinary studies in NCSSM’s residential and highly interactive online programs. Faculty should plan on playing an enthusiastic role with colleagues across all campuses of the school in ongoing conversations and collaborations about ideas, goals, pedagogical methods, and authentic assessments in NCSSM’s teaching and learning environment.
Responsibilities include:
● Develop and communicate to students clear course objectives and goals;
● Plan and develop an instructional program that helps students assimilate specific course content and skills;
● Hold office hours and tutorial sessions as outlined by the Department of Humanities;
● Regularly monitor and evaluate students’ progress, providing them with resources and feedback on their performance;

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Applicants should demonstrate professional, native, or near-native proficiency of their language specialization and its cultural and historical contexts, a passion for teaching and learning, and a love of ideas.
Excellent organizational and collaboration skills. Ability to work with other faculty in the discipline to align courses, reflect on learning outcomes, and provide extracurricular opportunities for students.
Management Preferences:
Familiarity with ACTFL standards.
Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to identify students’ needs and develop engaging, practical, and informative courses.
Experience and expertise in working with advanced high school or undergraduate students in the novice, intermediate, and advanced levels of the language and in differentiating instruction to accommodate the range of students’ proficiencies at each level. Interest and ability to develop and teach high-interest topics-based courses that are taught in the target language and grounded in authentic materials.
Ability to teach a second language and/or Interdisciplinary Humanities courses.
Willingness to teach in both NCSSM’s residential and online programs, with experience in using appropriate educational technology to engage students in face-to-face and remote settings.
The ideal candidate will be eager to participate fully in the wide variety of academic and cultural endeavors our school values, offers, and promotes. An exciting feature of NCSSM’s academic calendar is “January-Term,” consisting of two two-week sessions when faculty members lead intensive learning experiences both on and off campus. The ideal candidate will have the interest and ability to develop and lead these sessions on specialized topics that will appeal to NCSSM students. We also offer opportunities for students to travel domestically and internationally during this period; as such, experience in leading student travel groups and/or the willingness to do so is a definite plus.
Education and Experience:
Master’s degree in a World Language, linguistics, comparative literature, or a related field in the humanities, with a proven record of effective and inspiring teaching of Spanish, preferably with advanced high school or undergraduate students.
Demonstration of language proficiency in a World Language other than English. Applicants may demonstrate this proficiency through being a native speaker, holding a degree in the language, or holding a certificate indicating advanced language study.

Description of Duties:
These 11-month EHRA positions are full-time, live-in positions reporting to the Dean of Students or designee. Community Coordinators are provided with a furnished apartment. In addition, utilities (electric, water, and local phone), internet access, and access to fitness facilities are complimentary along with one meal a day in the school cafeteria.
Duties and responsibilities include hall management and supervision, desk and on-call duties, emergency response and incident management, community and wellness programming, student support and discipline and committee work and community policy writing. Community Coordinators serve as front-line responders for student and residence hall emergencies.
Community Coordinators serve “in loco parentis” for each student residing at NCSSM and, along with counselors, academic advisors, and parents/guardians, are an integral member of the student support team. In addition, Community Coordinators are the primary point of contact for students’ families and work closely with faculty and staff members across campus to support students. Community Coordinators are responsible for building community within their designated residence hall and serving as a primary resource for their residents. Community Coordinators predominantly work non-traditional hours either directly with students or on a rotating duty shift; evening and weekend work are required. Community Coordinators are considered mandatory employees for the following events: emergency closings; adverse weather; and public health emergencies.

Specific duties:
Teach 3 class sections each semester and one 4 week or two 2 week January Term courses. Adopt core NCSSM science courses and develop new elective and interdisciplinary courses. Teaching responsibilities, as determined by the Chair, will be primarily residential classes but may include online teaching assignments. Specific courses for 2026-2027 will include two sections of Foundations of Data Science, with the remainder of the teaching load consisting of biology focused courses such as Classical Genetics, Molecular Genetics, Neuroscience, Evolution, Climate Change Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology and Research Experience in Biology.

NCSSM and the Humanities Department foster an environment of collaboration across departments and divisions and support community-engaged service and research. Description of Duties: Position reports to the Fine Arts Chair and is responsible for providing in-person instruction in Orchestra and string instrumental music. Duties may also include providing instruction in Music Theory, Piano and Guitar, Music History, or other music elective courses. The instructor will serve as artistic director and conductor of the NCSSM Morganton String and Symphony Orchestra, select and rehearse level-appropriate repertoire for performing groups, and direct the group during regular public performances as determined by NCSSM’s Fine Arts Series. The instructor will serve as the primary resource for students pursuing advancement in string instrumental performance and will be expected to facilitate student involvement in NCMEA and other honor events throughout the school year. The Instructor will maintain or establish contacts with community groups and promote collaborative artistic efforts that support or enrich the NCSSM Music program, cooperate and coordinate with other NCSSM Fine Arts faculty and local musical organizations, and support the overall music curriculum by instructing assigned courses and developing curriculum for these and new course offerings.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
● Strong background in string and orchestral music pedagogy,
● Well-developed skills in conducting and rehearsal strategy,
● Experience with guitar and/or piano,
● Interest in outreach and commitment to the greater music education community in North Carolina and beyond, and
● Commitment to professional development.

An exciting feature of NCSSM’s academic calendar is “January-Term,” consisting of two two-week sessions when faculty members lead intensive learning experiences both on and off campus. The ideal candidate will have the interest and ability to develop and lead these sessions on specialized topics that will appeal to NCSSM students. We also offer opportunities for students to travel domestically and abroad during this period; as such, experience in leading student travel groups and/or the willingness to do so is a definite plus.
Education and Experience:
Master’s degree in Music Education or Music Performance, or related field. Teaching experience, preferably with advanced high school students.
A Master’s degree is required. Candidate currently pursuing their degree must provide proof of degree conferral by the hire date.

Description of Duties:
Coaches are responsible for organizing and maintaining an Interscholastic team. Coaches are expected to create an atmosphere which will promote group and individual growth both in athletic skills and the concepts of teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship.
Coaches should have a thorough knowledge of all NCSSM and NCHSAA athletic policies and be responsible for their implementation for their team. Coaches work with the NCSSM athletics department to communicate expectations and information to student athletes on their teams. Coaches are required to be CPR certified and to complete NFHS coursework as required by the NCHSAA. Coaches will be required to drive school vehicles so they must have a clean driving record. CDL preferred.
