The Division of Student Life provides programs, services, and support for NCSSM. Areas in Student Life include Campus Safety, Counseling Services, Physical Activity and Wellness, Residential Education, Housing, & Dining, Student Health Services, Student Services, Student Conduct, the Title IX Office, and NCSSM SCSSI. The Division of Student Life provides support for all non-academic needs of students in the residential program (ex: housing, dining, counseling, medical). The division accepts the responsibility of “in loco parentis” for students and serves as the caretaker/guardian for students while they reside on our campus. The division partners with other departments and divisions on campus as well as families to provide a balanced and holistic experience for NCSSM Students.
Description of Duties:
This position provides comprehensive administrative and programmatic support for the Division of Student Life and the Counseling Services department. Serving as the first point of contact for students, parents, employees, and external constituents, the role facilitates essential executive support, including travel, purchasing, and contracts, for the Vice Chancellor for Student Life and the Student Life division.
Within Counseling Services, this role manages the SchooLinks college planning platform, coordinates over 50 annual university representative visits, oversees National Merit process and Tuition Grant administration, and handles daily reception and inventory needs. Additionally, this role serves as the logistical lead for major divisional events, such as the College Fair, UNC Showcase, Career Fair, and the annual Winter Holiday Dinner, collaborating with partners across the division to support wellness and Student Life programming.
This position also plays a critical role in coordinating NCSSM SCSSI (NCSSM Student and Constituent Support Services, Inc.) program operations. Acting as the primary liaison for Durham club sponsors, academic competition sponsors, and January Term (J-Term) sponsors, this role processes financial transactions and supports sponsors in managing logistics and purchasing for student activities, competitions, and travel. Responsibilities include working with sponsors to develop budgets, collect funds, execute credit card purchases, secure airline and hotel accommodations, process check, advance, and reimbursement requests, and ensuring that all spending aligns strictly with SCSSI’s 501(c)(3) guidelines to positively impact and support student and constituent programs and activities.
Management Preferences:

Description of Duties:
This 11-month EHRA EPS position is a full-time, mandatory, live-in position which reports to the Dean of Students.
The RLA Coordinator position is provided an unfurnished apartment. In addition, utilities (electric, water, and local phone), internet access, and access to fitness facilities are complimentary along with three meals a day in the school cafeteria (when open).
The RLA Coordinator is responsible for the selection, training and advising of the Residential Life Assistant program. The Coordinator works with all members of the CC team to develop selection guidelines, create the application process, train, and offer ongoing support and supervision to the selected RLAs.
The specific duties of the RLA Coordinator include:
- Coordinate application process using the Senior Leadership Campus Service process, supplementary documents, and additional process requirements
- Hold interest or Q&A meetings for juniors
- Update application as needed based on feedback from Community Coordinators and existing RLAs
- Schedule and supervise all aspects of the interview process – application review, group process, interviews, and other evaluation tools
- Communicate selection to candidates
- Hold RLA draft for community coordinators, identify both selected candidates and alternates
- Maintain spreadsheet of individual and group scores for evaluations, interviews and application readings
- Develop, coordinate, and facilitate training for RLAs and Community Coordinators
- Offer training in at least three specific timeframes: spring for rising seniors, during RLA Orientation Week, and on-going on a monthly basis during their senior year
- Write, edit, and maintain the RLA Handbook and clearly communicate expectations to RLAs and Community Coordinators
- Provide support to individual RLAs throughout the year – through monthly RLA meetings; individual scheduled meetings; and in response to academic, conduct, or emotional issues that arise
- Provide training opportunities for RLAs and inform Community Coordinators about these opportunities. Some of these sessions will be required for RLAs and CCs to participate together to foster team building.
Community Coordinators serve “in loco parentis” for each student residing at NCSSM and, along with counselors, academic advisors, and parents/guardians, are an integral member of each resident’s support team. In addition, Community Coordinators are the primary point of contact for students’ families and work closely with faculty and staff members across campus to support students. Community Coordinators are responsible for building community within their designated residence hall, serve as a resource for students, their families, and support team through consistent communication, bimonthly hall updates, and participation in and visibility at campus events.
Community Coordinator responsibilities include hall management/supervision, office supervision and administrative duties, on-call duties, emergency response and incident management, hall and duty related student transportation, community and wellness programming, conflict mediation, student support, and discipline. Every CC works a rotating duty shift that provides supervision and support for students. As evening, late night, and weekend work are common and required, the position lends itself to a non-traditional schedule. Other responsibilities include departmental and campus-wide committee work, campus service supervision, and additional duties as assigned. Community Coordinators will have evening and weekend work.
*This position is designated as an emergency and mandatory on-site position for adverse/public health emergencies.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in resid8ential life, education, recreational programming, and wellness as well as experience working with high school age populations. Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license with no serious driving-related convictions.

The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) invites applications for one Instructor of American Studies position at its campus in Durham, North Carolina. This position is a temporary, full-time position with a fall and spring semester assignment, 40 hours/week, FLSA Exempt. The anticipated appointment period is 8/5/2026 – 06/04/2027. This position reports to the Chair of Humanities, NCSSM-Durham.
The NCSSM-Durham Humanities Department offers courses in five World Languages (Chinese, French, Japanese, Latin, and Spanish), American Studies, and a broad range of English and interdisciplinary Humanities courses. Offerings in our Fine Arts program include studio and performance courses in the visual arts, music, and drama. Our program also includes student- and faculty-led seminars and independent studies.
Description of Duties:
Founded in 1980, the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics is a state-supported residential and online high school for students who have demonstrated exceptional talent or interest in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology. Since the school’s inception, the humanities and fine arts have been an integral part of an NCSSM education and have played a key role in helping the institution fulfill its mission to cultivate a new generation of informed, empathetic, engaged, and ethical citizens and leaders.
The position reports to the Chair of Humanities, NCSSM-Durham, and is responsible for providing instruction in American Studies I, the first part in a two-course sequence required of all NCSSM juniors. It is the core shared humanities experience for all incoming students—a course in which students not only gain a sense of the chronology of American history, literature, and culture but also dive deeply into selected primary and secondary texts, topics, and issues in American culture. Students earn double credit for this course: a credit in English and a credit in History/Social Science for each semester’s study. All sections of this multi-section course focus on the study of primary sources in their historical and cultural contexts: historical documents, literary texts, and other cultural artifacts that highlight multiple voices and experiences.
The expected teaching assignment for the position is three course sections of American Studies I in Fall 2026 and three course sections of American Studies II in Spring 2027. The new instructor will also participate in sessions 1 and 2 of January-Term. During the fall and spring semesters, the new instructor will collaborate with another American Studies instructor with complementary expertise to develop an integrated syllabus in light of the American Studies program’s shared learning outcomes and course guidelines. Two of the three course sections will be co-taught with this colleague, with a section capacity of 22 students. One of the three sections will be solo-taught, with a section capacity of 14 students. Collaboration with the Chair of Humanities will also be ongoing throughout the year to support the new instructor’s teaching and assessment of students’ learning.
Humanities faculty are responsible for developing and teaching innovative and engaging humanities curricula, with a focus on interdisciplinary studies, in NCSSM’s residential and highly interactive online programs. Faculty should plan on playing an enthusiastic role with colleagues across all campuses of the school in ongoing conversations and collaborations about ideas, goals, pedagogical methods, and authentic assessments in NCSSM’s teaching and learning environment.
Other responsibilities include:
- Develop and communicate to students clear course objectives and goals;
- Plan and develop an instructional program that helps students assimilate specific course content and skills;
- Hold office hours and tutorial sessions as outlined by the Department of Humanities;
- Regularly monitor and evaluate students’ progress, providing them with resources and feedback on their performance;
- Structure and manage an environment conducive to learning;
- Model for students responsibility to self and others;
- Follow the school’s philosophy, policies, and procedures;
- Participate in departmental, faculty, and staff meetings;

Successful candidates will have the content knowledge to teach American Studies, the core Humanities experience for all NCSSM juniors, and the willingness to work cooperatively and effectively with colleagues to develop and follow shared practices for this multi-section course.

Description of Duties:
This temporary position resides within the Division of Student Life and provides driving assistance for NCSSM students and programs. Responsibilities include being able to drive vehicles from a 10-passenger van to a 44-passenger bus safely to transport NCSSM students to various activities and events (ex: athletic practices and competitions, personal appointments). In particular, NCSSM Varsity Sports teams which may require some evening and weekend responsibilities.
This temporary position must comply with practices and standards laid out in the NCSSM vehicle regulation.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
This position requires general knowledge of vehicles (ex: how to check oil, change a tire, put air in a tire).
Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:
Must have a valid CDL, Class B with passenger and school bus endorsement. Must be in good standing with the department of Motor Vehicles. Must be able to perform pre and post trip inspections.
