Dr. Julie Schlenker Murthy ’96 Memorial Fund

Giving in memory of
Dr. Julie Schlenker Murthy ’96

Dr. Julie Schlenker Murthy of Cary, North Carolina, passed away on May 11, 2023 at the age of 45. Julie was born and raised in Fayetteville and earned a high school diploma from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM), a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry with Honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Doctorate in Engineering Sciences (Environmental Chemistry) from Harvard University.

Julie lived across the United States—North Carolina, the Boston area, and the San Francisco Bay Area—before finally returning to North Carolina to be close to family in 2020. She served as the Director of Instructional Programs in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard University before devoting her time to her family by raising her young children and being a comforting source of stability for them during their various transcontinental moves.

She was an avid gardener of flowers and vegetables, global traveler, and lover of the outdoors and animals. She cared deeply about improving science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and environmental sustainability and protection. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Vijay Murthy, two young children, Maya and Kiran, two playful cats, and her parents, James and Linda Schlenker.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages contributions be made to the Dr. Julie Schlenker Murthy ’96 Memorial Fund at the NCSSM Foundation. The gifts will be used to establish a permanent memorial tribute at NCSSM because the school played an important role in Julie’s academic and personal development that helped to guide her career towards becoming a STEM educator.
