Ever wondered what happens when we throw something “away”? Where does it go, and what are the impacts of waste on people and the planet? In this course, we will explore sources of and solutions for dealing with trash using the three pillars of sustainability to guide us: environment, equity, and economy. Students will learn through readings (including Trash Talk by Iris Gottleib), hands-on activities such as calculating greenhouse gas emissions of disposal methods, and group discussions. The course culminates in a project focused on solutions to manage humanity’s ever-growing problem of waste.
