Video tour of fire station allows online forensic students to take a virtual field trip

Durham Fire Station #2 is the oldest operating fire station in Durham, NC.

NCSSM offers forensic science courses to North Carolina students, both online and through videoconferences. This allow students to learn topics such as arson investigation from forensic instructors at NCSSM while continuing their education at their local schools. However, having students spread across the entire state can make class field trips nearly impossible. So when NCSSM instructors Amy Jernigan and Candice Chambers decided they wanted to take their online and videoconference students to a local fire station to learn more about what firefighters do, they needed a creative solution.

Working with video production specialists at NCSSM and local Firefighter Mike Shaffer, Jernigan and Chambers created a video field trip of Durham Fire Station #2 and shared it on YouTube. This way, not only their students but students everywhere could have access to this learning tool. To date, more than 62,000 people have viewed the video.
