Jeff Milbourne ’99, a physics instructor at North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics from 2007 to 2015, has received the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. He joins 108 teachers nationwide, selected by a panel of distinguished scientists, mathematicians, and educators following an initial screening at the state level. Winners of the Presidential honor receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation to be used at their discretion.
Since September 2014, Milbourne has been serving an 11-month Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship in Washington, D.C., and finishing doctoral work in science education at North Carolina State University. Working with NCSSM students who are conducting research, he has focused his doctoral dissertation on problem solving in ill-structured spaces. In the fall, he is moving to California to join his wife, Chelsea Redeker Milbourne ’99, an English professor at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.
