Six accomplished women spanning a range of ages, races, and scientific fields will discuss their careers at “Lean In, Women in Science,” a panel discussion at North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics on Friday, April 21, 2017. The talk will be followed by a dinner, in which participants will dine in small groups with the scientists, and a networking session.
The event, now in its fourth year, is an official event of the 2017 North Carolina Science Festival, a multi-day celebration showcasing science, technology, engineering and math across the state.
“We’ve called the event ‘Lean In’ because we admire Sheryl Sandberg’s book, Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, in which she encourages each of us to be receptive to opportunities in the workplace,” says Amy Sheck, dean of science at North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics and organizer of the event. “It inspired me to create an event that supports more young women to enter science and math fields.”
The event will consist of two parts–a panel discussion, followed by either dinner with a panelist (pre-registration required), or a networking session organized by Women in Bio. All ages and genders are welcome, but the main target audience is high school girls.
This year’s panelists are:
- Tashni-Ann Dubroy – President, Shaw University, former research chemist, and entrepreneur
- Ashalla Freeman – Director of Diversity Affairs, UNC Chapel Hill School of Medicine
- Karyn Hede – Science writer, journalist, and news editor for Genetics in Medicine
- Patricia Phelps – Director of Professional Development and Career Office, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine
- Laura Rowley – Associate Director, Technology and Talent, NC Biotechnology Center
- Meg Shea ’04 – Experimental physicist, PhD candidate, Duke University
