Sue Anne Lewis: Student Life and Service Learning, skating and shrimp
Position: Student Life Instructor and Service Learning Coordinator
Years at NCSSM: 11 years + 1 trimester
Home: Durham; originally from Marshallberg, NC
What she does outside of work: Lewis’ newest hobby is roller derby. She’s been to one practice so far and is trying out the derby name: “Boogie,” inspired by the nickname of Garrecyn, daughter of Lewis’ girlfriend, Kelley Hoback Marrale. Otherwise, Lewis can most likely be found milling around town with Kelley and Garrecyn, creating memories at the Museum of Life and Science and other Durham hotspots.
What coworkers may not know: Lewis becomes “one with nature” on her boat while scooting around Core Sound and other waters near Marshallberg. Like Forrest Gump, Lewis has shrimped for a long time — going out as a child with her fisherman father.
Best part of her job: Getting to interact with incredible students from all over the state, who go on to do amazing things. Lewis loves seeing a student that has built upon a moment shared or skill taught — knowing that she has made an impact.
Favorite perk of working at NCSSM: Mini-Term: “France twice, Greece with ‘the Moose,’ this will be my second Italy tour, and Washington, D.C., my first year.”
Lewis appreciates the new perspective she receives each time she visits a country thanks to the individual viewpoint of the students in the group.
One thing about working here that she would do differently: “Add more hours to the day so everyone can have more sleep, less stress, and a life outside of work.”
