You are cordially invited to the NCSSM-Durham Orchestra Concerto Concert on Sunday, May 18, at 2 p.m. in the NCSSM-Durham ETC Auditorium.
Our program will begin at 2:00 PM with the NCSSM-Durham Wind Ensemble. Featuring several light and fun popular music selections from film and musicals, the Wind Ensemble will perform John Williams: The Symphonic Marches (Raiders March, Imperial March, and Olympic Fanfare), Suite from Hamilton, Selections from Aladdin, and Music from How to Train Your Dragon. Senior wind ensemble members will be recognized. Following this brief ceremony, the Wind Ensemble will be joined on stage by several alumni to perform one final piece – Sòlas Anè (Yesterday’s Joy) – which will be conducted by NCSSM professor emeritus Phillip Riggs.
Following the Wind Ensemble and after a set-change (3 pm), the NCSSM-Durham String Orchestra will reprise their performance of Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins. Then, immediately following the Bach Double, the NCSSM-Durham Chorale will join the Orchestra to perform “A Light Shines in the Darkness,” a beautiful contemporary mass by John Michael Trotta. This is a multi-movement, large work for choir, organ, and strings suitable for the concert stage. Cast in 8 moments the work draws on texts that examine the many facets of death, the pain of transitions, and the hope, peace, and joy of a better place.
In a season when NCSSM-Durham has lost a beloved teacher, colleague, and friend, Dr. Tamar Avineri, this work provides a timely opportunity for our community to quietly reflect while immersing in this beautiful musical work. We invite you all to experience this at whatever level is appropriate for you.
As always, this concert is free of charge and families with small children are welcome. If you are unable to attend in person, the concert may be viewed remotely as well at this link.
This Fine Arts event is free and open to the public.
