On Sunday, March 8, at 3 p.m., the NCSSM-Durham Orchestra will present a concert featuring composer/guitarist Baron Tymas. This concert will feature his original composition, “Snow Suite,” a collection of jazz compositions featured on his 2023 album, “Have You Ever Seen the Sun.” Reminiscent in form of Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons,” the Suite consists of five movements including “10,000 Years of Peace,” “Reimagine,” “Heat,” “Stirrings,” and “Snowbound.” Additionally, the orchestra will perform Thom Sharp’s “Jazz Suite for String Orchestra” featuring Tymas on guitar.
Baron Tymas is a guitarist and composer whose playing is rooted in groove, rich harmony, and a deep love for creative expression. His work blends deep tradition with imagination, and his guitar playing reflects a lifetime of listening, learning, and growing—on the bandstand, in the studio, and in the classroom.
Tymas has released four albums as a leader, including “Have You Ever Seen the Sun,” “Montréal,” and “Insight at Midnight.” He has collaborated with some extraordinary artists—Nate Smith, Kofi Burbridge, Jeri Brown, Camille Thurman, and Stephen Riley, and has performed with Branford Marsalis, René Marie, the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra, and the North Carolina Symphony, among many others.
In addition to performing and composing, Tymas has spent much of his life as an educator. He has taught and performed on five continents, and/or directed programs at several colleges and universities, including Concordia University in Montréal, North Carolina Central University, UNC-Chapel Hill, NC State University, and the University of Richmond.
Tymas is based in Durham, North Carolina. He performs, records, teaches privately, and develops new interdisciplinary work. He is inspired by the power of music to tell stories, open hearts, and move people.
This concert is free of charge and, as always, families with small children are encouraged to attend.
