Kevin Baxter is the Vice Chancellor & Chief Campus Officer for NCSSM-Morganton and joined the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in January 2017. He carries executive-level responsibility for administration and oversight of NCSSM’s campus in Morganton and also provides leadership for public affairs and communications across the institution.

Kevin’s career has largely centered on Honors education – first at the University of Maryland and then at East Carolina University – where he designed, built, and grew special programs and communities for talented scholars. This work led him to his current role at NCSSM where since 2017 he has led the development and opening of the newest campus of the UNC System at NCSSM-Morganton.

Kevin is deeply engaged in Burke County and throughout Western North Carolina. A 2022 graduate of Leadership North Carolina, his current service roles include serving as Chairman of the Board of C2Life Foundation, serving as a board member with UNC Health Blue Ridge, the WNC Bridge Foundation, and the YMCA of Catawba Valley, and serving on the steering team for the Industrial Commons Innovation Campus, the Work in Burke initiative, and the Appalachian State University Hickory Campus Advisory Council. He and his family have established roots in Morganton and are thrilled to be part of such a diverse and resilient community in the foothills of WNC.
