The Ratio Revelry: Unveiling Proportional Relationships

The Ratio Revelry: Unveiling Proportional Relationships

Date(s) & Location(s):
July 13 - 18, 2025 in Morganton, NC
Grades Eligible:
Rising  7th 8th 9th
Course Description:

In this class, we will explore the fascinating world of proportional relationships by using measurements and proportional reasoning to bring everyday objects to life in two dimensions. Students will engage in hands-on activities to analyze and discuss how different objects, such as dolls, candy bars, or any item of their choice, would look if enlarged or altered proportionally. We will also examine what these objects would look like in three dimensions and consider the social and cultural implications of design and representation.

Proportional reasoning is a key mathematical concept that helps students understand how numbers and equations relate to real-world scenarios. By manipulating ratios and proportions, students will discover patterns, solve problems, and make predictions. This skill is crucial not only in math, but also in other subjects such as science, music, and geography. Mastery of proportional thinking enables students to approach complex problems with confidence and helps them see connections between different areas of knowledge.

I presently teach 6th, 7th, & 8th grade mathematics at Caldwell Online Academy. I have two amazing daughters, ages 19 and 16 as of this April. My oldest plans on attending college next year to finish her nursing degree to eventually become a nurse anesthetist and my youngest is preparing for career in engineering (mechanical most likely). I am passionate about teaching math and making all levels feel comfortable and welcome to build a learning environment that encourages questions and to push beyond just the numbers. I believe in failing forward and pushing to the extra degree. “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” John Dewey
