Course Description:

In this course, we will explore the science and practice of mindfulness meditation (paying attention to the present moment, on purpose, non-judgmentally). We will discuss basic neuroscience principles, like neuronal communication. We will also discuss what happens in the brain and nervous system during and following mindfulness training, with a focus on how mindfulness can be used to relieve stress, promote learning and achievement, and identify and regulate emotions. Students will learn mindfulness practices that can be used to manage stress and improve focus during daily life (e.g., seated and walking meditation, deep breathing techniques, body scan, etc.) and will engage in a half-day mini mindfulness retreat on campus. No prior mindfulness experience is necessary for this course.
