Explore the intriguing world of forensic science. Learn to analyze evidence, including fingerprinting, fiber analysis, ballistics, arson, trace evidence analysis, poisons, drugs, blood spatters, and blood samples. Apply scientific methods to solve fictional crimes using forensic tools and technical resources, forming and testing hypotheses, conducting proper data collection, and developing responsible conclusions. This course blends biology, chemistry, and critical thinking to introduce you to forensics fundamentals. Material is taught online and through in-class lab time. Good writing skills are imperative.
This course is distinct from Honors Forensic Detectives: The Science of Solving Accidents and offers a unique learning experience. You can take these courses independently and do not require sequential enrollment.
Requirements:
● Prerequisites: B or higher in Language Arts/English, completion of Biology and
Math III through your local high school or NCVPS
● Materials/Textbook: Materials will be provided on loan from NCSSM. Due to potential graphic material in some of the modules, parents are asked to sign a permission slip.
● Site Requirements: Facilitator assistance will be required to set up labs. Ready access to a computer with internet and web conferencing capabilities. Headphones equipped with built-in microphones are recommended for shared spaces.
