What is the Foundation?

The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics Foundation originated in 1979 as a non-profit organization supporting the continued success of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. The Foundation does this by soliciting and managing corporate, private, and foundation funds which further enhance the School’s academic, programmatic, residential, and outreach capabilities. The Foundation is led by an Executive Director and is guided by a Board of Directors. Katie Wagstaff, Executive Director of the NCSSM Foundation, is the primary Foundation contact.

Using Foundation funds

Funds generated through the Foundation, including project-specific funds as well as endowment funds, remain the responsibility of the Foundation. All expenditures from these funds must be coordinated through and approved by the Foundation via an established disbursal and accounting process.

Initiating a grant proposal

Approval of a funding need and the subsequent development and submission of a proposal must follow an established process created by the Foundation and the School’s Institutional Advancement Office, and coordinated by Brian Faircloth, NCSSM’s Grant Writer. Staff and faculty members interested in seeking corporate or foundation funding should contact Brian for further guidance and documentation.

Reporting on grants

The NCSSM Foundation reports on all grants awarded via the Foundation. While the reporting requirements of each individual grant may be unique, it is commonly accepted practice to report on the financial and programmatic results of the grant one year from the date of receipt and/or at the end of the funded program. While all reporting on grants awarded via the Foundation is managed by the Foundation, significant input from staff members managing funded programs is encouraged and necessary. Please contact Brian Faircloth, NCSSM Grant Writer, for further information on grant reporting.

Whistle Blower Policy

The NCSSM Foundation has a “whistle blower” policy that should be followed if you are reporting a concern or complaint about an accounting, auditing or internal control issue, procedure or problem related to NCSSM Foundation funds. Your concern will be taken very seriously and appropriate steps will be taken to prevent retaliation by the Foundation against any person submitting a complaint or concern.
