North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics’ Summer Accelerator is in full swing during June and July. The program extends to a global audience our decades of experience in offering innovative courses and opportunities to talented students. The program generates its own revenue from participants who participate in a one-week residential or online experience.
For example, last week, NCSSM held one Early Accelerator (7th-9th grade) session in Durham and an Accelerator (10th-12th grade) and Early Accelerator in Brevard. Early Accelerator students in Durham took courses in creative digital fabrication, epidemiology, and solar physics, while students at Brevard took courses in investigative science, astronomy, and math. There were plenty of fun hands-on labs and experiments. After classes, students participated in evening activities including yoga, a movie marathon, and bonding over s’mores. Students in Durham took a trip to the Morehead Planetarium and Pelican’s SnoBalls. Students in Brevard visited Sliding Rock in Pisgah National Forest. At the end of the week, students presented their final presentations to their families.
This week, there is an Early Accelerator session in Durham and another Accelerator and Early Accelerator session in Brevard, as well as a STEM camp for students with visual impairments and blindness in Durham. Sessions online and at both locations will continue through July.
