Former Senator Carol Moseley Braun visits NCSSM, speaks with students

NCSSM recently welcomed former Senator Carol Moseley Braun to campus. Senator Moseley Braun was visiting North Carolina from Illinois and had the chance to visit an American Studies class, meet some students, and take a brief tour of campus.

Moseley Braun is currently visiting professor of political science at Northwestern University in Chicago. She was brought to the school by a connection with NCSSM Instructor and Dean of Distance Education Jamie Lathan. Moseley Braun came across Lathan’s research on African American soldiers in World War I while researching her own family history, after finding a photograph of her grandfather in his WWI uniform. Moseley Braun reached out to Lathan, and the two arranged a visit to NCSSM to discuss their research.

Among many other accomplishments, Senator Moseley Braun was the first female African-American Senator, the first African-American U.S. Senator for the Democratic Party, and the first female Senator from Illinois. She spoke about her life and her career with NCSSM students, answering their questions, and even giving an impromptu talk on American government.

“What an honor it was to host Ambassador Braun at NCSSM! I am so grateful for her willingness to share her time, expertise, and wisdom with us,” says Lathan.
