Greg Powell joined NCSSM in March 2023 as a Community Coordinator on our Durham campus. Greg was born in New Jersey but grew up in Monroe, NC, and graduated from NCSSM in 2005. He wore many hats during the 18 years between graduation and his return as a faculty member, some of which include a bicycle mechanic, conservation biologist, commercial fisherman, and human services director. Greg earned his bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife and conservation biology at NC State University. His favorite part of traveling and being amongst people is creating connections and fostering community, which is ultimately what led him back to Durham after spending a handful of years in the Midwest. Greg has a wide range of interests, but toward the top of the list are photography, bicycle touring, automotive/motorcycle mechanics, PC gaming, and searching for the best soft pretzel in town. He is a collector of stories and loves to share, so don’t hesitate to seek him out if you’re ever on campus.
