Bring Barbie to Life: is Barbie/Ken proportional? What would Barbie look like if we brought her to life? In this class we will answer those questions and more as we use measurements and proportional reasoning to 2-dimensionally bring Barbie/Ken to life. We will assess and discuss our results and what Barbie/Ken would look like if they were real people (3-Dimensional). We will also discuss and debate whether these designs have a social impact.
Barbie to Life
I began my teaching career in fall of 2002 and have primarily taught middle grades math. I received my Masters in Middle Grades Education from Gardner-Webb University in 2005. During my 22 years serving in education, I obtained and renewed my National Board Certification in Mathematics as well as served as an Instructional Facilitator for Caldwell County Schools. I served as an adjunct teacher at Western Piedmont Community College for 3 years in addition to my role in Caldwell County Schools. I presently teach 6th, 7th, & 8th grade mathematics at Caldwell Online Academy. I have two amazing daughters, ages 19 and 16 as of this April. My oldest plans on attending college next year to finish her nursing degree to eventually become a nurse anesthetist and my youngest is preparing for career in engineering (mechanical most likely). I am passionate about teaching math and making all levels feel comfortable and welcome to build a learning environment that encourages questions and to push beyond just the numbers. I believe in failing forward and pushing to the extra degree.
