Agency’s Mission Statement
The office of State Archaeology Research Center is a state agency under the NC Office of Archives and History whose mission statement is: “The mission of the NC Office of Archive and Research is to collect, preserve, and utilize the state’s historic resources so that present and future residents may better understand their history.”
Agency’s Goals and Programs offered to Clients/People Served
The Office of State Archaeology (OSA) is a section of the Division of Historical Resources, Office of Archives and History, NC Dept. of Cultural Resources and coordinates the statewide program of archaeology. The Research Center of the OSA is an archaeological laboratory where all artifacts procured from state archaeological endeavors are identified, processed, and cataloged. The goals of the agency center around preserving the historical integrity of North Carolina and serve the people of NC by their efforts to instruct the public on historical preservation.
Agency’s Impact on the Community
This agency has impacted the community by preserving the historical integrity of North Carolina. This is achieved through their protection of endangered archaeological sites, state-wide inventory of sites, regulatory reviews of construction projects, and processing of artifacts. The OSA also impacts the community through tis involvement in public education programs on prehistoric and historic archaeology through workshops, symposia, and presentations to school groups, amateur archaeological and historical societies, and government agencies.
