Agency Mission Statement:

The UNC Morehead Planetarium and Science Center informs and inspires the public about the foundations and frontiers of scientific discovery. Through innovative educational experiences, Morehead engages the public and the University community in a forum for interpreting contemporary science.

Agency Goals and Programs:

The planetarium primarily offers shows about space, and sometimes other topics, in its planetarium dome. Non-credit classes for all ages and special courses for teachers are also offered. In the past, they have trained prospective NASA astronauts in celestial navigation so they could pilot their spacecraft if the navigation systems failed.

Agency Impact:

The planetarium has managed to inform the community about science and space for years. It has encouraged young children’s interest in space and has educated university students about space too.

Volunteer Duties:

  • Keeping kids in line and under control
  • Assisting camp counselors in teaching young kids about different science topics such as space and the sun
