Agency’s Mission Statement:
The Library Association of Waxhaw is a non-profit organization that operates a used book store, the Waxhaw Reading room, in order to increase awareness of and usage of the Waxhaw Library and to generate revenue to be used for the building of a new and larger library for Waxhaw.
Agency’s goals and programs offered to clients/people served:
The Library Association of Waxhaw’s goal is to raise enough money to open a new public library in Waxhaw, NC and to generate funds for the existing library. The used book store is called the Reading Room and is entirely run by volunteers and sustained by contributions of money, books, and volunteer time.
Impact agency has made on the community:
As stated above, the goal of this agency is to raise enough money to open a new library as well as to generate funds for the library that already exists in Waxhaw. In addition, the book store provides a local place for people to buy inexpensive books, and is currently the only book store in the town.
Volunteer Duties:
- Opening up (turning on lights, taking signs out to the street, turning around the open/closed signs)
- Shelving donated books
- Cleaning
- Straightening up books
- Greeting customers
- Operating register
- Helping customers find books
- Categorizing/alphabetizing books
- Managing the customer wish list
- Closing the store
- Counting money
- Anything else the supervisor asks.
