Agency’s Mission Statement
The mission of the Green River Preserve is to provide a challenging and nurturing learning experience and to inspire a deep appreciation of interconnectedness, ecological respect, and the joy of living.
Agency’s Goals and Programs offered to Clients/People Served
The Green River Preserve is a place where the majesty of the wilderness is unspoiled, an environmental summer camp where bright young naturalists can discover the abundance of beauty, life and wonder that wilderness holds. In 1988, the Green River Preserve reinvented what a summer camp could be. Every summer since, campers have explored with new friends the Preserve’s streams, mountains and woodlands under the guidance of trained naturalists. They have participated in non-competitive yet challenging activities ranging from archery, rock-climbing, and fly-fishing, to pottery, crafts and creative writing. Most importantly, campers have found here a place where, as bright and motivated learners, they are free to be smart, curious and creative.
Agency’s Impact on the Community
Green River Preserve has impacted the community in several ways:
1. GRP offers programs for schools in which the students are exposed to aspects of science, art and culture of the Southern Blue Ridge Mountains and the mountain people through hikes with mentor naturalists as well as two interdisciplinary courses of study based upon two books: The Education of Little Tree by Forrest Carter and Crow & Weasel by Barry Lopez.
2. Green River Preserve is currently one of fewer than 100 non-profit partners of Leave No Trace, the foremost organization dedicated to promoting and inspiring responsible outdoor recreation through education, research and partnerships.
