Agency’s Mission Statement

Equality NC is a statewide group dedicated to securing equal rights and justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. We work toward that goal by effectively lobbying the North Carolina General Assembly, executive branch, and local governments on issues like inclusive anti-bullying policies, employment discrimination, hate violence, privacy rights, sexuality education, adoption, domestic partnership, HIV/AIDS, and more. We also work to engage North Carolinians with educational programming and outreach efforts.”

Agency’s Impact on the Community

During my first week full week there, I was able to see firsthand Equality NC’s impact by watching as the North Carolina House of Representatives passed an important anti-bullying bill that enumerated reasons children are often bullied and required teachers and administrators to keep an eye on those students. Two of the categories were “sexual orientation” and “gender identity.” When Governor Perdue signed it into law, this was the first time either of those phrases had been included in the statutes of North Carolina. Small but significant steps forward like these are what Equality NC has been accomplishing.
