Agency’s Mission Statement

To protect children, strengthen families, and help all North Carolinians to achieve maximum self-sufficiency (in cooperation with the Social Services Commission.)

Agency’s Goals and Programs Offered to Clients/People Served

The DSS provides training, technical assistance, and consultation to the local staff who work in programs for families and children including Child Welfare, Family Support, Work First, Child Support, and Food and Nutrition Services.

Impact the Agency Has Made on the Community

Yancey County contains Burnsville, a small community, so DSS is able to play a vital role in the community’s wellbeing. Broken and unstable families are often discovered by the police, schools, neighbors or doctors of Yancey County, and are reported to DSS. DSS steps in and, depending on the family’s situation, decides if the children are safe to remain with their family. If not, the children are placed in foster care. DSS tried to support and improve the emmotional and physical health of children who are taken away from their families with the help of other community resources. They either place them at Crossnore, a local boarding school or try to find a new home for them. DSS has helped mend many broken families and has saved many children’s lives in Yancy County.
