Cherry Hospital

Agency’s Goals and Programs: Cherry Hospital strives to ensure that each patient receives maximum psychiatric and therapeutic services to the extent of his/her individual needs. Cherry Hospital has separate treatment programs for adolescents, patients between the ages of 18 and 60, and patients over 60. They also provide psychiatric rehabilitation programs for adults with severe and persistent problems, as well as providing treatment to tuberculosis patients that are non-compliant to treatment or treatment resistant. Agency Impact on Community: The hospital was originally created for black, mentally-ill patients in 1880. For the first 85 years, it served the black population in the state of NC. In 1965, it implemented the Civil Rights Act and began serving patients of all races for 33 counties in the Eastern Region. It currently serves 36 counties with a 274-bed capacity. The particular program this summer is designed to provide remediation and continuity to at-risk students in all grade levels. It does this through services that are consistent with its congressional charter and the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross and Red Cross Movement. Agency Goals and Programs: WCARC aims to to prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. They offer Disaster Services, Services to Armed Forces, Health and Safety Services, and Blood Services to people for aid. Agency Impact: WCARC has assisted the community by responding to 121 single family disasters impacting 398 citizens, sending 230 emergency communications on behalf of the Armed Forces, collecting 11,810 pints of blood with the potential of saving 35,430 lives, and by certifying 7,192 citizens in CPR and First Aid over the years. Agency’s Goals and Programs offered to Clients/People Served The people the volunteers encounter receive care and attention that a nurse may not have time to give. The volunteers make the patron’s stay at the hospital a less stressful experience. They also assist the nurses with their tasks. Agency’s Impact on the Community Volunteers brighten the stressful day a person at the hospital may be having. Nurses have a lesser workload because of the volunteers, so they are able to get more done. Volunteer Duties Help patient and family with simple tasks such as bed making, water, discharges from hospital, etc. Help nurses with paperwork, phone calls, and errands. Help direct patient and visitors around the hospital.
