It helped found OASIS, a domestic violence and sexual abuse shelter as well as the free clinic for the Hunger and Health coalition. It has also been an advocate and support system for alternative religious community in the area as well as minorities.</p>

<p><strong>Impact the Agency Has Made on the Community</strong></p>
<p>The Watauga Humane Society has had a prodigious impact on Watauga County by providing a temporary home for over a thousand animals each year. In the past five years they have saved over fifty-two hundred animals. For the majority they receive their donations from animal control, stray and people who surrender their animals. In 2009, the majority of the animals were dogs, with 602, and cats, with 417. They also saved rabbits, birds, ferrets, reptiles, hamsters, guinea pigs, and rats. They are currently in the process of building a new facility to increase the number  of animals they can have.</p>
