The goals of the program for which I currently have training, which is required for me to become a junior camp counselor, are to develop leadership skills and cooperation needed as a counselor and become familiar with CPR.

1. Jaycee Jamboree Day Camp Session 2 Outdoor Expedition: Campers will discover the great outdoors by land and sea. Learn about the wildlife in our region, explore the water through swimming and canoeing, and see different sights around eastern NC.
2. Jaycee Jamboree Day Camp Session 8 All Stars: Campers will not only go to a minor league baseball game, but they will enjoy a week filled with traditional sports such as basketball, flag football, golf, and nontraditional sports such as disc golf, ultimate Frisbee, and more.

There might also be 2 dance camps at which I will be a junior camp counselor. The goals of those are for kids to “travel” the world learning dances from across the globe and explore creative dance, make scrapbooks, learn dance terms and dances worldwide.

The agency has provided a variety of athletic, recreational, and arts and crafts activities for all ages and special populations. It has taught not only skills for the courts and fields but also life skills such as teamwork and conduct. It has created a tremendous sense of community through the accomplishments of both individuals and teams.

Pitt County Memorial Hospital is a regional resource for all levels of health services & information and provides acute, intermediate rehabilitation, and outpatient services to people in 29 counties. It is also a teaching hospital for many health professionals and is the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at ECU.

Agency Impact on Community:

The hospital provides healthcare services to over 1.3 million people in 29 counties in Eastern NC and averages about 33,000 inpatients and 266,000 outpatients treated a year. It also provides employment for many young people, with over 900 physicians and 1,200 nurses.

Agency’s Mission Statement

The Summer HUGS Program  (Helping Us Grow Successfully) is a program for autistic preschoolers, ages 3-5.  Part of the Pitt County School system, the center is, “A place to teach, a place to grow, a place to realize your dreams.”

This summer program is an extension of the educational experience provided to the children during the regular school year. The children work on many communication skills that keep up with their IEP goals. Here, the children follow a daily routine similar to that from the school year to maintain and improve these skills.

Agency’s Impact on the Community

This division of the Pitt County School system has greatly facilitated the education of autistic children of ages 3 to 5. They’ve been given individualized attention and opportunities to learn in a safe and secure environment. This agency also gives these children a more natural transition to kindergarten.

RMHC gives families a hotel-style bedroom with one or two double beds, a private bath, and a private phone. They offer a friendly setting where families can rest, prepare hot meals, and share their concerns and experiences with other parents in similar situations.
