Mission Statement:

To empower children, strengthen families, and enrich our community through soccer, the world’s game.

Agency’s Goals and Programs:

The Association provides an organized soccer league to all of its players and participants. ABYSA offers soccer for children as young as 5 all the way through the high school level. They also provide valuable exercise and a physical outlet in a safe environment. Participants can compete at the recreational level, challenge level, or state-wide classic level. Summer camps are also available to participants.

Agency Impact on Community:

Currently, over 4,000 kids are enrolled in ABYSA. The program teaches children about sportsmanship, teamwork, and the importance of exercise in a safe environment. ABYSA also offers programs to help underprivileged children in the community. With programs like “Project Kick Start” and “Go to Goal,” ABYSA is able to reach out to a broader span of children and is helping them learn about important life skills though participation in the soccer program.

Volunteer Duties:

• Volunteering at the ABYSA fundamentals soccer camp as an assistant coach
• Assisting campers in their soccer development
• Helping the head coaches in instruction
• Supervising campers during snack, lunch, and at the pool
• Assisting with camp setup
• Putting up all of the camp equipment

Agency Mission Statement:

We will create a regional church campus and innovative church organization to focus our energy on integrating people of all ages and backgrounds into a dynamic, spirit-filled Christian community. We will accept people as they are and endeavor to care for them through God’s restorative love. We will teach and encourage people to grow in Christ, and challenge them to fulfill their God-given potential. We will serve people in our region and throughout the world through education, evangelistic outreaches, short-term missions, and support of like-minded missions and ministries.

• Street Feeding Program to the homeless in down town Asheville 2-3 times/month
• Distribution of Angel Food to community recipients
• Organizing an annual summer talent show program by the mission team for all ages
• Youth summer activities like soccer, basketball, VBS and Wednesday night youth services

Agency Impact:

The mission department feeds over 300 homeless people in the community on the 2nd and 5th Saturday of every month in downtown Asheville. They distribute over 600 boxes of food to community people in the past year. They have held 3 talent share programs that encouraged people participation. They bring in youth for Wednesday service each week. They teach bible and other kids activities to children in different age groups. There is a children’s church every Sunday for children ages 3-12 years old as well as a youth program for middle and high school students every Sunday morning and Wednesday nights.

Volunteer Duties:

• Help set up and serve food as well as clean up at the Street Feeding programs
• Package and distribute food on Angel Food distribution days
• Work with younger children during summer activities
• Work with coordinator of annual talent share program and plan/prepare participants
• Attend and lead Friday night prayer meetings

Mission Statement:

GCPC strives to support the student scholarship program in the Iglesia Jerusalem community, to consult with and support the building of a new church facility for Iglesia Jerusalem, to enhance cross-cultural understanding in GCPC community, and to support the participation of a youth member of IJ as an international participant in the Presbyterian Church (USA) denomination’s triennial youth convention in July.

Agency Impact on Community:

GCPC has developed a community garden on church property and has worked with other ministries to aid the community of Asheville and other churches with programs such as assisting the homeless shelters of the city.

Volunteer Duties:

• Preparing for a group trip to Iglesia Jerusalem in Coatepeque, Guatemala in July
• Planning and raising funds for the trip
• Preparing materials to publicize IJ’s scholarship program
• Organizing files at GCPC that show the 15-year participation in this partnership and photos of former visits to and from Iglesia Jerusalem’s congregation
• Interpreting to GCPC’s congregation about the visit and IJ’s community

Mission Statement:

To help apply Christian principles by eliminating hunger.

Agency’s Goals and Programs:

Hearts With Hands takes donations from many sources and distributes them to disaster victims. They also are a food bank and are in partnership with Manna and Goodwill to help those in need of food or clothing.

Agency Impact on Community:

Hearts With Hands distributes food to those in need all over the Asheville community. They also participate in programs such as one in which they provide food for children whose only meal is given to them at school.

Mission Hospital is one of the fastest growing volunteer agencies in the Asheville area. A combined 100,000+ hours have provided professional free service to thousands who needed it and kept hospital bills lower for the benefit of the patients of the community.

Agency’s Mission Statement

To inspire people to discover and develop their potential to care for themselves, others, and the world around them through challenging experiences in unfamiliar settings.

Agency’s Goals and Programs Offered to Clients/People Served

The agency’s goal is to build technical outdoor skills, inspire personal growth, develop leadership/teamwork, and build a diverse and supportive community. There are individual hiking courses and group courses for schools and families. Schools can come back as interns the next year after completeing an applciation.

Impact the Agency Has Made on the Community

Outward Bound has a program called the Unity Project where campers use their wilderness experience as the catalyst for building unity within the school community. They recognize racism, inequality, and injustice with a sense of courage and understanding in order to promote diversity and support within the community.

The Western North Carolina AIDS Project is dedicated to providing HIV-related services to the people of Western North Carolina through client support, prevention education, and outreach activities in a collaborative and financially responsible manner.

• Financial assistance to those who qualify for housing, medical, transportation, and other expenses

• Food delivery services for those who qualify

Agency’s Impact on the Community

This agency has helped to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS in Western North Carolina through educational programs, providing free condoms to the community, presenting at health fairs, etc. They have worked with people in high risk groups in particular and are working to end the stigma against AIDS and people with the disease by educating them about it. They also work with HIV positive people in Western North Carolina to provide them with the support that they need to have the best quality of life possible.
