Dr. Sheck joined the NCSSM Biology faculty in 2001. She is currently the Dean of Science and served as Biology Coordinator for several years. Dr. Sheck continues to teach biology and she specializes in ecology, genetics (molecular, classical, and population), and scientific research. She supports students entering into science competitions and generally fosters the development of young scientists. Prior to coming to NCSSM, Dr. Sheck conducted research in the Entomology Dept of North Carolina State University. Her academic training is in the area of ecological genetics and she is particularly interested in evolutionary interactions between pest insects and agricultural crop plants.
Dr. Sheck enjoys hiking, travel, and nature. She has taken extended trips to Costa Rica, Eritrea, Great Britain, and Hong Kong and has traveled with students to the Galapagos Islands and to Nicaragua.
Both of Dr. Sheck's sons have benefited from the wonderful education provided by NCSSM and are pursuing careers in science and engineering.
