2011 17th Century Virginia, Dr. Sarah Russell, Director (Assistant and Van Driver)
Come learn about the schemes, strategies and crises that defined the first English settlements of the Virginia. Were the Jamestown colonists greedy, violent nitwits as some American historians depicted them? Or . . . were they beleaguered men faced with an array of unusual challenges including extreme drought, lead poisoning, malarial fevers, and complex foreign relations as some archaeologists suggest? We will use the work of eminent scholars across several disciplines, including Edmund Morgan, James Kelso, and Walt Disney to answer thisquestion and others about the origins of English North America. We will also travel to eastern Virginia, and spend a couple of days exploring the expanded and updated Jamestown living history museum, as well as other historical sites along the James River.
