Mathematical Chemistry is the area of research that works to understand how mathematics and mathematical methods can be used to understand interesting chemical events. This topic is sometimes called “computer chemistry” and is not the same as computational chemistry. Math chem studies the underlying mathematical principles of chemical systems. In this class, you will learn a wide variety of mathematical/numerical techniques and how they can be applied to the understanding of chemistry.
Modern science is conducted by making observations, doing experiments, developing theories, and using computer models. In this class, students will learn how to use molecular modeling (computational chemistry) to study chemistry. In addition to weekly labs, readings, and quizzes, students will be asked to complete a small independent project on a topic of interest.
