MS Textile Engineering (Polymer Chemistry), Georgia Institute of Technology, 1976
BS Chemistry, Florida State University, 1973
In 1976 began my career as a research chemist and worked 8 years for 3M Company and Celanese Fibers Co. In 1984, started and managed a textile chemical product development and international trade company, Esprit International. In 1999, became Director of International Trade for the State of North Carolina. In 2001, began my teaching career at Enloe HS and moved to NCSSM in 2005.
- At 3M Company: Developed an improved soil resistance “Scotchgard” fluorochemical polymer formulation by adding isocyanate branches to the polymer backbone
- At Celanese Fibers Company: Developed a process to impart hydrophobic “Fortrel” polyester fibers the property of adsorbing water
- At Esprit International: Developed two new textile chemical processing finishes that reduced yarn damage due to friction
- For NC State Government: As the state’s Director of International Trade, developed an expanded support network for exporters to a level not previously achieved.
- At Enloe HS: First teacher to use the Internet and a laptop to provide chemistry instruction.
- At NCSSM: Developed two online course, AP Chemistry and Applied Chemistry and Engineering; developed a new residential course “Chemistry by Inquiry”; received the NCSSM award of “Exceptional Contribution in Classroom Innovation”
