Dear Friends of NCSSM,

Former governor Terry Sanford first proposed a residential high school for students focused on math and science in the early 1960's. When I was approached with the idea again in 1977, I knew this was exactly what our state needed. The needs of students having special abilities in these areas were simply not being met.

The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics has grown and developed into one of the top high schools in the nation for science and math. It has become a model magnet school and is producing some of our state's leading high school students.

The students at NCSSM are offered challenges commensurate with their abilities. As the 21st century continues, The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics will help to achieve our goal of making our schools first in America by the end of this decade. I believe that this school will continue to educate our youth to their fullest potential and produce students that will go on to lead our state and the nation in the years ahead.
