Working closely with the entire School community,
the President, and the Foundation Board of Directors, the Office of Development
has identified a number of funding priorities critical to the continued
growth of the School. Together, these priorities address the mission of
the School and form the basis for the Odyssey Campaign. Primary to the
success of the Odyssey Campaign will be the involvement of people - both
volunteers and staff who share one single goal: making The North Carolina
School of Science and Mathematics a strong and healthy institution for
the students of today and tomorrow.
In order to make the NCSSM experience even more attractive to potential and current students, the Odyssey Campaign will secure funds to build athletic facilities that will accommodate the needs of our soccer, track and tennis teams, and bring NCSSM’s athletic facilities up to the same standards found at most high schools across the state.
Also underway are plans for the renovation of Watts Hall. Built in 1908 as an original wing of the hospital, the building currently houses administrative offices, conference rooms, and the math and humanities departments. Since the School’s opening, Watts Hall has been the representative landmark of the School, the cupola on its roof a long-standing symbol of the School. With funds from the Campaign, Watts Hall will be renovated and restored it to its original beauty, enhancing its symbolic stature.
Additionally, the Odyssey Campaign will secure funds to refurbish current dormitories to further enhance our residential atmosphere. Critical to the “living and learning” experience at NCSSM is adequate and comfortable housing for our students.

CAMPUS ENHANCEMENTS: $1,500,000
Through a program of steady renovation and construction, NCSSM has worked steadily to turn what was once a vacated, historical hospital into a beautiful and functional campus.

ANNUAL FUND: $1,500,000
The Annual Fund is critical in maintaining the standards that make NCSSM one of the premier academic institutions of its kind in the nation. Each year, the Annual Fund helps the School meet the ongoing need for flexible, unrestricted income to support our academic missions, providing essential support of current operating needs that most directly affect our student’s day-to-day living and learning.TECHNOLOGY: $1,000,000
Technology, in all its various forms, seen and unseen, drives our nation. It plays a vital role in the way we do business, the way we communicate, the way we manage even the smallest of daily tasks. Society, as a whole, has moved from manually managing the business of the world to managing the systems that manage the business of the world. It is imperative that our nation’s schools continue to produce individuals that foster these advanced technologies. We must acquire the necessary equipment to facilitate classroom instruction and provide efficient, modernized office facilities so that the behind-the-scenes work continues to support efforts in the classroom. That is what NCSSM is all about. Just recently, the NCSSM campus became completely wireless, allowing students and faculty to access the Internet from any point on campus, whether inside a classroom or dorm room, or outside underneath one of the many large oaks that shade the campus. The Odyssey Campaign seeks support to ensure our technological goals remain aligned with the rapid growth of today’s computer-driven world.ENDOWMENTS: $2,500,000
Continued support is the key to establishing and maintaining successful academic departments, and no gift provides that security better than endowment support. Endowments are the most effective means of long-range financial stability of an organization.PROGRAMS: $1,000,000
The Odyssey Campaign will also seek support for various academic and enrichment
programs. The Campaign will fund programs of research and classroom initiatives
designed to improve the application of math, science and technology, outreach
programs that foster interest in math and science, and summer enrichment programs
serving students and teachers from across the state. Underserved populations
and regions of the state will be a priority.
