Opened in 1980, The North Carolina School of Science
and Mathematics (NCSSM) currently enrolls 600 juniors and seniors, representing
a yearly average of 95 of North Carolina’s 100 counties. The School
was the first of its kind in the nation - a small, residential, public
high school focused on the intensive study of science, mathematics and
technology. Unique and visionary in both concept and practice, the mission
of NCSSM is two-fold: (1) promote the study of math, science and technology
by providing an advanced curriculum not found in traditional high schools,
and (2) act as a catalyst for education reform across the state and country.
Moreover, the residential school inculcates in its students the desire
and ability to make a positive difference in the world.
NCSSM actively seeks students who are academically promising and who encompass a broad spectrum of experiences, backgrounds and beliefs. The School offers students in grades 11-12 a comprehensive, competitive and rigorous education – one that emphasizes a healthy balance of mind, body and spirit, with an understanding of and a willingness to embrace change in an environment that offers the freedom to grow and to learn.
