I am honored to serve as the National Chair of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics’ Odyssey Campaign, a historic endeavor that will help to chart the future of the School.

When I talk to people about NCSSM, I like to make three points. First, NCSSM is one of the best schools, not simply in North Carolina, but in the nation. It is true our students are bright, but when challenged by this institution, they become the best.

Secondly, students are transformed at NCSSM. My wife Terry and I experienced this with our son Charlie, class of ‘03, who worked harder and accomplished more educationally than he or we ever thought possible. Further, he met and became friends with kids just like him, bright and engaged. Together, they became better students and persons with brighter futures with the promise to contribute more to the state, the nation and the world. This is because of what they were challenged to accomplish at NCSSM.

Thirdly, the School does this on a shoestring, spending less per student than many other boarding schools in the nation. Just imagine what we could accomplish with resources comparable to other institutions? This publication outlines the funding priorities of the Odyssey Campaign, resources meant to make the School the best—and its students better.

Terry and I are proud of NCSSM; we believe in its future, and we support this Campaign. We welcome your commitment and participation in this journey.
