The N.C. School of Science and Mathematics, a public boarding school in Durham with students from across the state, came in number 66 on the 500-school list released this week. The school had previously not been eligible for inclusion in Newsweek's annual list.
Other area schools on the list include East Chapel Hill (126), Raleigh Charter (189), Green Hope (206), Chapel Hill (356), Durham School of the Arts (381), Panther Creek (410), Enloe (421) and Apex (447).
Newsweek used a new formula this year that considered factors such as graduation and college-going rates, as well as SAT, Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exam scores. The new methodology sharply changed where some schools had ranked in prior years.
For more information on how these rankings were tabulated, see NEWSWEEK'S Full Methodology.
