Yessic C. Spencer ‘84
Yessic Cozay Spencer III, 42, son of Yessic and Claudia Spencer, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008 in a diving accident.

Yessic was a Lt. Colonel in the United States Marine Corps. He is survived by one sister, Yves, of Greensboro, N.C., wife Sheolyn, daughter Clarke, son Christian, all of Gainsville. Fla., and a host of friends. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Charles A. Lockwood III (Buddy) ‘88
Charles A. Lockwood III (Buddy), Ph.D., formerly of Charlotte, was killed in a motorcycle accident in London, England, on Monday, July 14, 2008.

Buddy was currently a Lecturer in Human Evolution in the Department of Anthropology at University College London. In August, he was moving to Johannesburg, South Africa, to become the first director of the Institute of Human Evolution at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Buddy graduated from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in 1988, and graduated with honors from Duke University, where he was awarded the Fulbright Scholarship. He completed post-graduate work at SUNY at Stony Brook and later received his Ph.D. in Anatomical Sciences from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.

Buddy is survived by his parents, Charles and Eleanor Lockwood; sisters, Leslie House (Ben) and Amy Shoemaker (Jim); his nieces and nephews, Clara, Catherine, Charlie, Claudia and Ben. Also many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and colleagues around the world.

Rae Lynn Yates 88
Dr. Rae Lynn Yates, 38, of Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., formerly of Chadbourn, died Monday, May 5, 2008, in her home.

She is survived by her husband, Christopher Strickland; daughter, Christian Strickland; mother and stepfather, Carolyn and Ken Simmons; father and stepmother, Raymond and Ruth; sister, Heather Hinson; and brothers, Christopher and Wesley.

Amanda Caroline “Amy” Fisher ‘88
Amanda Caroline “Amy” Fisher, 38 of Raleigh, N.C., formerly of Polkton, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2008, at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.

A memorial service to celebrate Amy’s life was held Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at Polkton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gervase Hitch and the Rev. Susan Sides officiating. The family greeted friends following the service.

Amy was born in Cheraw, S.C., on November 1, 1969. She attended school in Anson County and graduated from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Queens University in Charlotte and her master’s in nursing education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Amy worked as a labor and delivery nurse at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte and Women’s Hospital in Greensboro.

She leaves behind her parents, Elizabeth B. Cameron of Wadesboro and Joseph C. Cameron Jr. and his wife, Vickie of Polkton; her sisters, Fran Cameron and Joanne C. Hopf and husband, Chris; her brother, Jason Toler and his mother, Deborah C. Toler and his fiancé, Janet; grandmother, Frances E. Cameron; aunts and uncles; cousins; and her beloved beagle, Petey.

Alan Timothy Metcalf ‘91
Alan Timothy Metcalf, of Rutherfordton, beloved son, brother, uncle and friend, died February 10, 2009. He is survived by his parents, Jack and Brenda Cole Metcalf, of Spindale; his two sisters, Karen Metcalf and Sherri Metcalf Splawn; nephews, Alex Splawn, Kyle Splawn, Richard Toms and Danny Toms, of Spindale, Cory Lail of Gastonia and Cole Lail of Clover, SC; and great-nephew, Dane Lail, also of Clover, S.C. He was a member of Spencer Baptist Church.

Paul Gary Fortenberry ‘92
Paul Gary Fortenberry, 35, of Scranton, Pa., formerly of Asheville, N.C., died Wednesday, December 23, 2009, at Community Medical Center in Scranton.

Born June 4, 1974, in Pontiac, Mich., Paul attended Erwin High School, graduated in 1992 from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics and attended the University of North Carolina at Asheville.

Paul is survived by his parents, Gary and Kaye Fortenberry of Asheville; a brother, Timothy Fortenberry of Black Mountain; his grandfather, Waymon J. Hensley of Asheville; and an aunt, Judy M. Cummings of Highland, Mich.

Marshall Blango Jr. ‘96
Marshall Blango, Jr., 30, of Blounts Creek, N.C.  died October 4, 2008, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, N.C.  Blango was born in Beaufort County on Sept. 18, 1978. He was the son of Marshall Blango Sr. and Allene Hill Moore. He attended S.W. Snowden Elementary and Aurora High School.

He was a 1996 graduate of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics and a 2000 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was employed with the Pitt County public school system as a teacher assistant. He was a member of Wares Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Blounts Creek.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Marshall Blango Sr. and Lola Blango of Blounts Creek; his mother and stepfather, Allene Hill Moore and Artis Moore Jr. of Edward; and three sisters, Monica Blango Ponds of Aurora, Veronica Blango Smith of Greenville and Shakila Aldridge Jones of Rocky Mount.

Corey Ellis Hughes Dunn ‘06
Corey, age 21, died tragically in a snorkeling accident in Hawaii on December 28, 2009.

He is survived by his mother Karen Hughes Dunn of Charlotte, his father Lance Michael Dunn, of Monroe, and his brother Eric Matthew Dunn of Charlotte.

Corey was known as curious, bold, bright, adventuresome, fun, daring; and he was loved as a son, a brother, a grandson, a nephew, a cousin and a friend.

Corey embraced every day given to him and was destined to do great things in the world of science and the environment. His enthusiasm in science began at Charlotte’s Open Door School Preschool which blossomed at Omni Montessori School. While in school he volunteered thousands of hours at Discovery Place expanding his love of science. In high school he attended the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham. He continued his studies of science and biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was hoping to pursue a medical career.

Michael Vincent Carpenter ‘07
Michael Vincent Carpenter, of Raleigh, died Thursday, March 11, 2010, at the age of 21.

Mike was an Eagle Scout with Troop 213. He graduated from NCSSM in 2007. He was in the environmental engineering program at North Carolina State University. Mike was a lifeguard and instructor at the YMCA and previously worked at the Eaton Corporation in Middlesex, North Carolina. An avid backpacker and outdoor enthusiast, Michael never got to hike the Appalachian Trail like he had hoped. With his intellectual capabilities and his passionate nature, Michael was driven to make a difference in the world.

Michael is survived by his parents, Vince and Theresa Carpenter as well as his siblings, Kelley (27), Colleen (24) and Nolan (19.)
