Network Printing

Printing via the NCSSM network is available to faculty, staff, and students.

Network Printers

The locations and names of the network printers are listed below. Students can print to either of the two printers located in the Library. Faculty and staff can print to any of the printers.

*Two-sided printing is available. Choose File>Print, then Properties. Select Two-sided (Duplex) Printing. Click OK and then once again.

Adding a Network Printer to Your Computer

Steps for Adding a Printer to a Windows-based System

See the next set of instructions if your machine runs Windows 7 (32 or 64 bit).

  1. Click on the Start menu
  2. Windows XP: Click on Run, then type cmd in the search box
  3. Click Enter
  4. Double-click on the cmd icon
  5. After the command window opens, type Start \\Potassium\Library (substitute another printer name from above for Library if appropriate)
  6. Hit Enter. It may take a few minutes for this step to complete.
  7. When prompted, type ncssm.edu\your username in the username field and your password in the password field
  8. Click OK. It may take a few minutes for your computer to locate the correct driver.
  9. If prompted to install a driver, do so. Once the Library on Potassium print queue window appears on the screen, you are ready to initiate normal printing procedures.
If \\Potassium\Library does not work, try \\Babylon\Library.

Steps for Adding a Printer to a Windows 7 (32 or 64 bit)-based System

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Computer
  3. Access the Q: drive. If you do not have access to it, follow these instructions:
    1. From the menu, select Map network drive
    2. Change the Drive to Q:
    3. Type \\chlorine.ncssm.edu\garden in the Folder field
    4. Check both boxes
    5. Click Finish
    6. When prompted, type ncssm.edu\your username in the username field and your password in the password field
    7. Check the box beside Remember my credentials
    8. Click OK
  4. Select the Student folder, then the Print Drivers folder, and lastly the HP LJ 4015 Win 7 folder.
  5. Select the appropriate file (32 or 64 bit) for your machine
  6. Double-click on the file
  7. Click Run
  8. Note where the file will save, and then click Unzip
  9. Click OK
  10. Click Close
  11. Go to the Start menu and over to Devices and Printers
  12. From the menu, select Add a printer
  13. Select Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer
  14. Choose The printer that I want isn't listed
  15. Fill in the radio button beside Select a shared printer by name
  16. Type \\Potassium\Library in the field [Note: Try matching 32 and 64 bit laptops with \\Babylon or \\Potassium, respectively]
  17. Click Next
  18. When prompted to install the driver, do so. If your computer is unable to find the driver, click on Browse
  19. Look for the folder HP Universal Print Driver (it should be on your C: drive)
  20. Click Open and then once again
  21. Click OK
  22. Click Next
  23. Click Finish
If \\Potassium\Library does not work, try \\Babylon\Library.

Steps for Adding a Printer to a Macintosh Computer

  1. Open System Preferences
  2. Select Print and Fax
  3. In the window that opens, select + to add a new printer
  4. Select the Advanced icon. (If you do not have the Advanced icon on the toolbar:
    1. Move your cursor to a place on the toolbar without an icon
    2. Right-click, alt+click, or double-finger tap to pull up a menu
    3. Select Customize Toolbar... from the menu
    4. Drag the Advanced icon onto the toolbar)
  5. Once the window populates (it may take a moment), pull down the Type menu and select Windows
  6. Set the URL field to smb://Potassium/Library (substitute another printer name from above for Library if appropriate)
  7. Set the Name field to library printer. Otherwise, the printer will be known as Potassium
  8. Pull down the Print Using menu and select Generic PostScript Printer
  9. Click on Add
If \\Potassium\Library does not work, try \\Babylon\Library.

The printer is now configured and selected as the default (which you may change in the Print and Fax window. However, the first time you print, you must enter your network credentials, as follows:

  1. From the Print and Fax window, click on the Library printer to view the job queue
  2. Highlight your job
  3. The job will be paused. Click Resume
  4. A box will pop up asking for your password. Ensure that Connect as Registered User is selected
  5. In the Name field, enter ncssm\your username
  6. In the Password field, enter your password
  7. Check Remember this password in my keychain unless you wish to enter your password every time you print
  8. Click on OK

Fees for Printing

The cost for NCSSM-related business is $0.02 per page for black and white, and $0.15 per page for color. The cost for personal business is $0.05 per page for black and white.

Adding Pages to Your Network Printing Account

Students can purchase additional network printing pages in the Library from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The cost is 5 cents per page; pages must be purchased in increments of 100 and with cash only.
